A veneer is a thin layer of restorative material that is bonded to the surface of the tooth, either to improve the appearance of a tooth or to protect a damaged surface. Veneers are a versatile cosmetic solution to improve the colour, shape, size or length of the teeth. They can be used to conceal a single damaged tooth or to create a uniform appearance across a row of teeth.
How veneers work
Made from ceramic, porcelain or a composite material, dental veneers can be fitted over the front upper and lower teeth – the teeth that are visible when you smile. Each veneer is custom made to meet the needs of the individual, to disguise any imperfections and to create a healthy looking smile.
The treatment process
Because they are bonded to existing teeth, veneers are suitable for most people. But before we agree to treatment we examine your teeth to make sure that they are strong enough to support the veneers and to find out exactly what you would like to change about your teeth.
We begin by shaping the teeth, removing a minimal amount of surface enamel to allow space for the veneer to be placed on top. We also take an impression of your teeth to accurately create the veneers. During the follow up appointment the veneers are firmly bonded in place. It can take a few days to get used to the shape and feel of veneers and you may need to return to the Practice to review the fit and bite of the veneer – they might simply need some additional smoothing before they feel natural.
Veneers are strong, but they need to be looked after if you are to keep them in good condition for the long term. We recommend you brush and floss daily to maintain healthy teeth and gums and visit your dentist regularly.
