A crown or ‘cap’ is a laboratory-made restoration to repair chipped, cracked, worn or unsightly teeth. Crown materials vary and we provide gold crowns, porcelain bonded to metal crowns as well as the latest in the metal-free alternatives for optimum aesthetics.
Our advanced zirconia and porcelain crowns allow light to be transmitted through the crown in a similar way to a natural tooth. No metal is used internally in the construction of the crown so there is no tell-tale black line around the edge which has been a common problem with older metal bonded to porcelain crowns.
- We prepare your tooth to accommodate your crown, your dentist will remove a layer of the outer surface but leave a strong core.
- Once shaped, your dentist will take impressions and note the shape of your teeth so the custom-made crown will fit with your natural teeth and blend in perfectly. While you wait for your new crown a temporary crown may be fitted to protect the prepared tooth.
- When ready, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and fix the permanent one firmly in place.
Brush and floss your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day. We recommend you see your dentist regularly so they can keep an eye on your crown and the tooth underneath.
A crown protects a tooth from decay, but not where it meets the gum, and it does not guard against gum disease, so it’s important to keep the area clean and free from bacteria by attending the hygienist on a regular basis.
